Toward the Future of Metal Research

Our vision for materials science research lies in the combination of state-or-the-art manufacturing and processing, multiscale mechanical testing, advanced electron microscopy, and multiscale computation to close the feedback loop for modern structural materials design and development. The primary focus of our group is utilizing cutting-edge manufacturing, mechanical testing, characterization, and computational tools to understand the fundamental science of complex metallic materials and develop next-generation structural materials operated under extreme conditions (high temperature, high stress, ion irradiation, etc.). Key research thrusts include high-temperature multiple principal element alloys for space and aeronautical applications, additively manufactured refractory alloys for fusion energy applications, additively manufactured temperature-resistant lightweight alloys for automobile and aviation applications, and alloys with hierarchical structures for higher strength and ductility.
